Read slower

Do the arithmetic: how many articles did you read last week? Now name three ideas you still remember. For most people the first number is in the dozens and the second is one, or none.
Reading to pass over, and reading to keep
We have two very different activities sharing one word. The first is scanning: the eye runs over the text, the brain lifts the gist, done. That is the right mode for news and email. The second is reading so that an idea stays and changes how you work — which takes several times as long, and almost nobody spends that time any more.
The trouble is that we carry the scanning habit into things that deserve the other mode. The result is a feeling peculiar to this era: knowing the names of a great many concepts and being able to use very few of them.
Four concrete changes
- Read fewer sources and read each one properly. Unfollowing ten things to read two of them fully is a trade that pays.
- Stop at the end of each section and restate what you just read in your own words. If you cannot, you did not read it — you looked at it.
- Write three lines afterwards: the main idea, where you disagree, and one thing you will do differently.
- Reread. A second pass through something good gives more than a first pass through something new.
Why the third line is the one that counts
Knowledge does not become change without passing through action. An idea you liked but did not use for anything within two weeks will almost certainly be gone — not because you forgot, but because the brain keeps what it sees being used.
Reading a great deal without reflection is much like eating a great deal without digesting it.
The simplest test: at the end of the month, look for anything you are doing differently than at the start of it. If there is nothing, that month's reading volume mattered less than you thought — and halving it to make room for thinking would have produced more.
Reading slower is not reading less out of laziness. It is accepting that the time spent understanding is part of reading, not an optional extra sitting outside it.
