Everyone seems to be moving faster than you

There is a feeling that is hard to name: you are fine, then you open your phone for five minutes, and suddenly your life feels slow. Nothing changed in those five minutes. You simply saw twenty people at the best moment of their year.
The comparison you are making
You know everything about your own life: the hesitations, the evenings nothing got done, the unanswered emails. You know exactly as much about other people's lives as they chose to show you. This is not an unfair comparison — it is not a comparison at all, because the two sides are not in the same units.
What makes it harder than it used to be is scale. You once measured yourself against a few dozen people in a village or an office. Now it is a few thousand, selected by an algorithm precisely because they have something worth showing. Nobody was built to absorb that daily.
Four things that actually help
- Change the question. Not am I behind them, but is this something I actually want. Very often the answer is no.
- Unfollow the accounts that leave you feeling worse, even when the people are lovely and you like them. This is a nervous-system matter, not a loyalty one.
- Fix one benchmark: yourself a year ago. That is the only side measured in your units.
- Message the person you envy and ask what the hardest part has been. The answer almost always returns the picture to its real size.
Nobody posts the three years in which nothing happened. Everyone has them.
On being slow
Something rarely said: lives do not run at the same tempo, and that is not a fault. Some people settle at twenty-five and some at forty. People who started late seldom narrate the years that seemed to lead nowhere, so we get the impression those years did not exist.
The useful question is not where you stand relative to other people but whether you are heading in a direction you chose. The first answer changes every time you open your phone. The second only you can answer, and it does not depend on what anyone posted today.
